California Campin'
It August already ... Where did the summer go?
Get Away With Your Family!
kid watermellon

Only a few more weeks of summer are left! Don't let the summer pass without camping with your family.

In these tight economic times, and even with high gas prices, RVing is an economical way to vacation, and a foremost way to make memories in the outdoors! Most families can find a campground to get away from it all, roast marshmallows, take a hike, and just relax ... only 100 miles from their home. For an RV getting 10 miles per gallon, that should cost less than $100 in fuel! Compare that to flying a whole family somewhere! RVing is a less expensive way to travel!

So, save yourself some money, relax, breathe some fresh air and go camping!

Important Warning Regarding Propane Tanks

propane tankMethamphetamine cooks are buying propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger, and emptying them of the propane gas. Then they fill the propane tanks with anhydrous ammonia, which they now have a recipe to cook Methamphetamine. After they are finished with the propane tanks, they return them to the store. The stores refill the tanks with propane gas, not knowing the improper substance that was inserted in the tanks and sell them to their consumers. Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane gas and hooked up to a grill, recreation vehicle, etc.

You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas.  If there are evidences of these substances, do not purchase the propane tank and advise the vendor of your findings. More info.

How to have fun with your kids!

Try these creative ideas for having fun with your kids:

marathonRun a Marathon ... But not all at once. Set a goal with your kids to run a full 26.2 miles over the course of a year (an idea pioneered by the nonprofit group Marathon Kids). To help your little Flo Jo finish, track her progress from zero to marathoner on a chart. You can include loops around a campground in your marathon. Before the last leg, fashion a finish line in the driveway or campsite and cheer your kids across!

Destroy a toaster. Next time you replace an appliance or part of your RV, give the old model to your kid. Together, you can dissect the machine and examine its parts. Don’t know much about circuitry? Howstuffworks.com offers a primer.

Watch future editions for more ideas of things to do with your kids!

RVing is a Less Expensive Way to Travel
Jim Ferri, a free lance writer, notes that RVing is a great opportunity to see the real U.S. from people level, not 35,000 feet, and it's fantastic. Driving across America, it’s the journey that’s the destination. And its memories stay with one for a long, long time. Which is why when he saw a headline a few weeks ago that said: “RV Vacations Are Least Expensive, Study Shows” be grabbed the article. Learn more...

Featured Region: High Sierra

High SierraThe High Sierra region is a relatively narrow portion of the state extending from Lake Almanor in the north, down the California/Nevada border to Bishop, and cutting Westward down to its southern border at Tehachapi.

This area focuses on the dramatic Sierra Nevada mountain range, and is an outdoor-adventure seekers paradise. It is home to Lake Tahoe, the largest, deepest alpine lake in North America, the spectacular Yosemite Valley and wilderness areas with granite as far as the eye can see. You can also find towering Sequoia redwoods, tranquil valleys, meadowlands, historic Old West towns, and wild life abounds.

While much of the High Sierra is off the beaten path ... it is worth the effort and gas to explore this amazing region! The area is also known for many ski resorts, so its best to call to be sure parks are open during the late fall, winter and early spring months. While summer is the busiest camping time for this region, spring and fall are spectacular. Happy trails!
