Winchester

In 1884, a wealthy widow named Sarah L. Winchester began a construction project of such magnitude that it was to occupy the lives of carpenters and craftsmen until her death thirty-eight years later. The Victorian mansion, designed and built by the Winchester Rifle heiress, is filled with so many unexplained oddities, that it has come to be known as the Winchester Mystery House. Choose from 3 different tours to view this amazing home. The Winchester Firearms Museum and Winchester Antique Products Museum are on site as well. Read more>

Sheperd WinnerSally Shepherd (shown here with her dog at Kiva Dog Beach in Lake Tahoe) lives with her husband of 35 years outside of Lodi on a 3 acre parcel. She works full time in the accounting dept of a construction company and just celebrated her 56th birthday. They now camp in a fifth wheel, but started camping in a tent 30+ years ago when their kids were young. Read more>

Sally has won her choice of a weekend getaway ... I think we can make her desire to go kayaking at Rancho Seco a reality! Click here to see last month's photos and answers.

This Month's Photos: Take a guess . . . where were these pictures taken? Here pictures of 2 California locations for you to guess ... and a tie breaker should there be lots of correct answers.

Featured Region: the San Francisco Area

San Francisco

Some say the Jewel of Northern California is San Francisco ... and this time of year is especially beautiful there. The days and nights are mild and generally free from the fog that can chill you during the summer.

This region is blessed with ocean access, a bountiful bay, and breathtaking hills. The culturally diverse interests and tastes of those who settled here did the rest. The East Bay and Marin in the north, combined with Santa Cruz and Silicon Valley in the south, make up four beautiful prongs to encircle the jewel, San Francisco.

This region starts just south of Napa and goes south stopping just short of Santa Cruz & Scotts Valley. The southern border along Hwy 101 is Gilroy.

Be sure to plan a visit to San Jose's premiere attraction - the Winchester Mystery House (don't forget to use the coupon found in the San Francisco region of the camping guide)!

There is much to see and do, so be prepared to take your time to explore the amazing San Francisco area. More info>>

How to Be Prepared for the Unexpected

You drive the speed limit, you use your blinkers and you follow the three-second rule. You’re a safe and cautious driver, but unfortunately collisions do happen. Though being in a crash is never an enjoyable experience, there are ways to make sure the process goes as smoothly as possible. Below are three steps to help guide you through.

Step One: Be Prepared -There are several items you should keep in your car at all times in case you are involved in a collision:.

  • Have a camera, pen & notebook, flashlight, and blanket.

Step Two: At the Crash Site - If the event is serious, the first thing to do is to call 911. Here is a list of actions to take if it is a non-injury collision:

  • Move your car to a safe location
  • Exchange information with other driver
  • Take down contact information for any witnesses.

Step Three: The Aftermath - After the crash occurs, there are still a few items to take care of:

  • Contact your insurance agent
  • If you feel body pain go to the Emergency Room

By following these steps and being prepared when a collision takes place, you can avoid the extra headache that comes with not having essential items handy or not obtaining the proper information. For more information on avoiding collisions, reporting a crash, or overall driver safety, visit www.dmv.ca.gov.

News Tid Bits!

California State Campgrounds Update: The Parks and Recreation Department and state finance officials have come up with an alternative plan to keep all State parks open, with a reduction of the hours or days of operation at most of them. The plan means that in many cases restrooms might be cleaned only once each day, some facilities will close weekdays and be open on weekends and holidays, and portions of a park, such as a back loop of a campground, may close part of the week. Information has not yet been released on actual changes to be made.

Arizona Rest Stops Closed: Beginning October 19, the Arizona Department of Transportation has suspended operation of 13 of their 19 rest areas. See list of closed rest areas.

Oregon State Park Fees: To fund ongoing park operations, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is proposing raising the day-use fee from $3 to $5 a day per vehicle, and raising camping fees $4 a night per site (from $16 to $20 now to $20 to $24). The increase would be charged starting January 2010.
