California Campin'
Celebrate the New Year with Camping!
Desert Site

Whether camping in the snow or seeking out the California sunshine, camping to start 2010 is a great idea. Why stay cooped up in a cold home with the heater running when adventure awaits!

A number of our parks specialize in meeting the needs of "snowbirds" (those folks who drive south for the winter). Some parks are great stopping points along the way ... a perfect place to explore for a few days as you meander to your sunny destination. Why rush when you can explore interesting communities en route?

Other parks are well suited to spending weeks and even months in a warm climate while you wait for spring to come at home.

All these parks are looking forward to making your RV travel experience one you'd like to repeat!

"Camper Rick" Heading South ...

CamperRickRVHi! “Camper Rick” here ... preparing to enjoy Christmas with family before hitting the road in our RV.

Right after Thanksgiving the Missus & I had our first experience camping in the snow. I really enjoyed playing in the snow and then warming up in our RV with all the comforts of home.

I've heard this said of RVing before, "My home stays the same ... just my back yard changes!" We're going to be enjoying numerous new "back yards" as we head south from our home in the Sacramento area and travel through the Central Valley to San Diego, followed by a brief stay at the Colorado River before heading to Quartzsite. If you're on the road too watch for our distinctive 5th wheel!

The Quartzsite show has been described as "spring break for seniors." Folks attending the show seem to be having a great time with their friends ... many of which return year after year. If you come to the show, be sure to stop by the Camp-California booth and say hi. We'll be distributing the beautiful 2010 edition of the camping guide. There are several significant enhancements to the guide this year, so you'll want a new copy! I hope to see you there.

Be sure to send me your guesses for December's photos!

Featured Region: the California Deserts

The high desert in the north and the low desert in the south are lands of extremes: heat and cold, bright light and deep shadows. You'll find soft sand dunes and deeply eroded cliffs, golden poppies and spiny cacti, creeping tortoises and soaring eagles - viewed against jagged mountains. With the area's silent and austere beauty studded with glittering yet relaxing resort cities, the deserts offer the ideal spot for re-energizing your senses. Come and give yourself over to this perfect antidote to a too-busy life.

Visitors to the desert region enjoy an endless list of activities:

  • hikes lead by park rangers at numerous state and national parks
  • outstanding shopping in Palm Springs
  • golf below sea level or in the shadow of the San Jacinto Mountains
  • bathe in the soothing waters of natural hot mineral springs
  • zoom on an ATV across the desert and dunes
  • watch Sandhill Cranes soar over the Colorado River
  • zip across the border to Mexico
  • and so much more!!!!

Wildflowers in the desert begin to bloom in mid January. A fair amount of rain has already fallen in many desert areas so this year's wildflower season could be a good one. We'll report more next month.

With some much to explore - you've got to get out in your RV! Come bask in the warmth of the winter California sunshine! More info>>

Camping Guide Enhancements

Many of our readers are loyal to our camping guide ... and we thank you. For those who have never used our camping guide, we encourage you to pick one up at the Quartzsite show, our member parks, the California Welcome Centers or order a free copy online.

2010CampingGuideThe 2010 edition includes a few enhancements we think you'll like:

  • Scratch & Win with RVing REWARDS! Scratchers - Peruse the 2010 camping guide and note the locations that distribute these scratchers. When you register to stay at these parks be sure to ask for an RVing REWARDS! Scratcher and you could win! The grand prize is an RV package worth thousands that will be awarded at the California State Fair in July. Additional prizes include your choice of free camping certificates. Read the 2010 camping guide for more information and watch future editions of the California Campin for updates!
  • Reorganized - the guide is now organized into three regions; Northern, Central and Southern California. This will be more convenient for those who travel east to west in California, such as from Sacramento or Bakersfield to the coast.
  • Non-member parks included - in the past only members of the California Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds have been included. This year, in addition to the parks that have chosen to support the RV park and campground industry, the guide includes campgrounds operated by National Parks, California State Parks and various other privately owned parks.
