Enjoy Bird Watching!

Bird_WatchAlong with the cooler weather and shorter days comes the sound of honking geese and the sight of migrating birds.

A couple of years ago, "Camper Rick" and I were staying in an RV park along the Colorado River. As dusk was falling, we heard a sound that can only be described as a racket! I wasn't sure what what was causing all the commotion, but I knew it had to be some kind of bird.

The following day, we made a point of walking to the end of the RV park as dusk was falling to see if we could determine the origin of the racket ... and we did. Apparently a couple of flocks of Sandhill Cranes made a habit of bedding down for the night directly across the river from the RV park. And, oh my goodness, did one flock have a lot to say to the next flock as they were landing and settling down! Apparently they had to tell each other all about their day!

You, too, can have magical moments as you travel and seek out feathered friends and other wildlife. California has many wildlife sanctuaries. Opportunities to watch these amazing creatures are closer than you think! The links below can help you find places near your home, or within easy RVing distance!

Featured Region: the Deserts

desertsThe California Desert area comprises 25,000 square miles of amazing scenery ... from Death Valley (an amazing 282 feet below sea level) to the stunning San Jacinto Mountains (10,834 elevation) surrounding the Palm Springs area!

Contrasts are not only seen in the elevations, but in the temperatures as well. While these desert areas are HOT in the summer, the winters are mild and a haven for folks seeking to escape colder climates and just wanting to get away from their winter routines.

Visitors to the deserts can choose to shop, dine and golf in one of the many resort communities, or go off-roading, hiking or horseback riding in a wilderness area. Or maybe you'd like to work on your tan by soaking up sunshine by a pool at one of our RV parks. Whatever your idea of relaxation and adventure, you can find it in the Deserts!

New Study Shows RVing Offers Greener Vacation Choice!!

RVing Leaves Smaller Carbon Footprint than Traditional Vacation

A new study which compares total carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) demonstrates that RV vacations are more environmentally friendly than vacations involving flying, driving and hotel stays.

The study, conducted by U.S.-based PKF Consulting, a third party independent research firm specializing in travel and tourism, revealed that a family of four taking an RV vacation will generate less CO2 emissions than a family traveling by plane, renting a car and staying in a hotel. Read More

No-text Law Goes Into Effect January 1, 2009!!

Starting January 1, 2009 a new law will go into effect where writing, sending, or reading a text-based communication while driving will be against the law for all drivers in California.

This new law applies to electronic wireless communications devices used to manually communicate with any person using text-based communication, including, but not limited to, communications referred to as a text message, instant message, or electronic mail.

Violating this law is punishable by a base fine of $20 for a first offense and $50 for each subsequent offense. With the addition of penalty assessments, fines can be more than triple the base fine amount.

Ideas for fun with your kids!

Try these creative ideas for having fun with your kids:

Go puddle jumping. If it's raining on your camping trip ... don't let that dampen your spirits. Grab a pair of watershoes and splash to your heart’s content. Follow it up with a cup of hot chocolate and stories of how silly you looked!

‘Get’ money. Give your child three piggy banks, one labeled ‘camping’, one ‘save,’ and one ‘share.’ Give them all the camping money to spend on your next trip, deposit the save money into their college savings account, and use the share money to buy a Christmas gift for one of the nearly 13 million kids living in poverty in the United States. Donate the gift to the Salvation Army or local charity.

Watch future editions for more ideas of things to do with your kids!
